Friends of Sligo Creek's Annual Fall Sweep the Creek

There are few things as likely to lift the weary out of the Washington D.C. woes than walking by our soothing and beautiful Sligo Creek. But there are also few things more likely to sour a nice walk with a friend or interrupt the quiet meditation on the rock than a creek spotted or filled with trash!
Fortunately for all of us, Sligo Creek stays fairly clean (given the ongoing efforts of many groups and individuals — perhaps including you). However, trash pieces large and small gradually accumulate in the creek and that is why we have two "Sweep the Creek" cleanup events each year. Our ninth annual fall "Sweep the Creek" will be held for most creek sections on Saturday, September 25, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. A few sections will be swept on Sunday, September 26 at varying times. Please see below for a complete list of creek sections participating in the Sweep this fall, the time for each section's work, and meeting locations. We are proud to announce that our Sweep the Creek will again this year be part of the larger "National Public Lands Day", the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. In 2009, 150,000 volunteers worked together on this day throughout the country on behalf of our natural resources. Read more about National Public Lands Day. We welcome individuals, groups, families, and students — students can receive service-learning credit for their work (we provide the forms and signatures). We also provide gloves, bags, water, and guidance on what help is most needed in each section (some sections may also request help with removing invasive plants). All you need to bring is your community spirit—and a willingness to get a little wet and dirty! There is no need to sign up ahead of time, but if you will be bringing a group or have questions, it is best to contact the Sweep Coordinator ahead of time at the link below. We look forward to sharing the honor of stewardship with you during the Fall "Sweep the Creek", an honor many volunteers before us helped ensure that we have and one that will help carry the good will on, spread it even further out, and as is always the case, bring it back around again.
