Winners of First Annual Sweep the Creek Photography contest

FoCS's First Annual Sweep the Creek Photography Contest was a success --- 10 great local amateur photographers had their work exhibited at the Sweep the Creek Celebration -- and viewing the approximate 40 photos was only one of several highlights of this fun event. FOSC Outreach committee wants to thank each photographer for their submissions.

Julie Wiatt, associate editor of the Takoma Silver Spring newspapers, and judge of our first photo contest, had this to say about the diverse collection of photos: "I enjoyed all the submissions. All of the photos demonstrate sensitivity to the beauty of the park, reveal different visions of what we see there, and remind us to appreciate the treasure we have in Sligo Creek."

Winners were announced at the Celebration. Our judge's comments about each are listed with each name. Click on the underlined photo name to see the photo. Photo names not underlined are not yet available. Please check back later.

Adult Amateur category

1st Place -- Don Olson. "Fishing the Falls." This is a good wildlife photo of a black crowned night heron, but also the blocks of tone and texture capture the stillness and suspense of the moment. Subtle, elegant.

2nd Place -- Mike Hoverter. "Snowy Sligo Bridge." Straight up shot of the Carroll Avenue Bridge displays the beautiful pattern of light and dark that snow makes of the Sligo Creek Park, and reminds us of the sumptuous beauty to be found close by.

3rd Place --- Julius Kassovic. "Tree Reflection." Illustrates the pleasure of reflecting on the abstractions present in the natural world.

Honorable Mention -- David Dubov. "Red Leaves." This close up of red leaves is a color treat.

Youth Category

1st Place --- Charlie McGrady. "Waterfall." I commend this photo for its abstract beauty of a captured instant of rolling water, and the photographer of the spirit of play with the element of water in this and his other submissions.
